Winter Aspen Green
Basics
NAME: Winter Green, sometimes goes by Win
AGE: sixteen
GENDER: female
SEXUAL ALIGNMENT: pansexual
MAGIC CATEGORY: extended-personal (you'll see)
POWER MANIFESTATION: Winter is a shapeshifter, but only in human aspect. She can alter her appearance to look any way she wants, although some shifts take more effort than others. While she could hold some appearances for days on end, others she can only perform for a few hours at most. The shifts that she practices more frequently are easier to hold, as well. When she is with her twin brother, who shares her talent, their magic combines in a strange way that makes it hard to tell them apart even if they don't look anything like one another.
Appearance
HAIR COLOR: dark brown
EYE COLOR: hazel
SKIN COLOR: almond-brown
OTHER TRAITS: Winter has a few minor burn scars in various places but doesn't draw attention to them.
OVERALL APPEARANCE: While she constantly changed her appearance when she was younger, Winter nowadays tends to stick to her (mostly) natural form. She has dark brown hair which hangs in ringlets to just below her shoulders, accented with streaks of copper that showcase the glossy, healthy sheen of her hair and darker strips that add depth. Her wide hazel eyes, ringed with full, black lashes, appear mostly brown in most lights, but in direct sunlight are the color of bottle glass with just a hint of darkness at the edges. She has a button nose, full lips, and sparse freckles that give her a childlike yet wild, natural, and sometimes almost ethereal air. She's a bit shorter than average but if you asked her height she wouldn't be able to tell you how tall she is. While she identifies as female, Winter doesnt care about sticking to the gender binary when she shifts. While she presents in a feminine manner more often than not, sometimes she will present in a manner that isn't immediately identifiable as "girl" or "boy", or in one that is more masculine.
Personality
LIKES: spending time with friends, ice skating, confusing people, spearmint, spring, flower crowns, fluffy dogs, rodents, Halloween, singing and dancing and generally goofing off
DISLIKES: wintergreen gum, the smell of menthol, crying, excessive heat or cold, messing up her hair, people who pretend to understand her, having a dripping nose
FEARS: separation, confinement, being resigned to one form forever, people who claim to have no friends, fire
GENERAL PERSONALITY: Winter is a confusing person. Often times when she meets someone new, she has fun with a little "game" she plays where she subtly shifts her features, one at a time, until she looks completely different, and sees how long it takes them to notice. While she is a playful person and likes harmless jokes, she almost never carries something too far. She's rather good at reading people, and if she notices someone is uncomfortable, she'll try her hardest to stop whatever is making them feel that way. Winter is inquisitive and likes to figure out what makes people tick, but she tries to do it in a way that nobody gets too upset, mindful of how her brother used to keep her from making people angry with her bold straightforward manner. She hates being alone unless that solitude is her own choice. While she doesn't do it as much as she did when she was younger, Winter still loves shapeshifting and making herself a completely different person. One of the reasons she doesn't do it as much is that it isn't quite as fun as it was when she had a partner-in-crime like her brother to match her transformations. While one may think that Winter's love of changing herself up frequently could stem from being uncomfortable with herself, it's quite the opposite. Winter loves shifting because it's a part of her. She doesn't really care what pronouns people use for her when she's in a form that's not necessarily recognizable as female as long as they aren't being a jerk, and often introduces herself by a shortened form of her name, "Win."
History
Winter has been a surprise from the beginning. Her mother was a magician, having the power to shapeshift into any animal, while her father was mundane. They loved each other more than anything else, and, even knowing the risk the Defenders would pose, they decided to have a child and start a family. Much to their surprise, however, they got two for the price of one: twins, a boy and a girl. Their daughter was a happy, loud child with warm skin, a mane of dark hair, and fire in her eyes, while their son was quiet, introspective, with pale skin and hair almost the color of snow. They planned to name their daughter Summer and son Winter, but the two of them had other plans. Both of them were magical, sharing a talent of shapeshifting in human aspect, but when the two were close together, it was extremely difficult to tell them apart despite the fact that they looked very little alike when in their natural forms. By the time the two children were around five, their confused parents had messed up their names so many times that the two just responded to either name at the same time, though the girl had taken an affinity to the name Winter, and her brother preferred Summer. Their mannerisms as they grew older made it easier to distinguish which was which for their parents and closer friends, but their parents decided to leave good enough alone and let the two use their chosen names rather than what had been originally planned.
Winter, Summer, and their parents lived in a close-knit, welcoming community that was regarded as a safe place for magicians to live in peace with mundanes. The twins made friends in their neighborhood, though they preferred the company of one another to anyone else. Their personalities helped to balance each other out, as well, with Summer keeping his curious, wild sister from getting into too much trouble, and Winter helping her brother past his shy and somewhat fearful nature.
However, peace and harmony couldn't last forever. One night, a group of Defenders who had located the place of intermingling that they thought almost blasphemous started a fire that quickly spread from home to home. Those who were trapped inside burned to death, and of the ones who were lucky enough to make it outside, most were captured or murdered by the Defenders. Winter and Summer were woken up by shouts across the neighborhood and were able to make it downstairs to wake up their parents. Winter went in their room to get them up, while Summer lingered outside and was ready to shout if anything bad was about to happen. As the twins' parents woke up and got out of bed, a piece of support from the ceiling fell and trapped Summer. Their father was able to pull Summer, burned and unconscious, out from beneath the beam as Winter and her mother escaped from the house. Their father gave Summer to their mother and then went back into the blazing inferno to try and find the twins' dog, saying he'd be right back out. He told the three to run, that he'd catch up with them, and they complied. He never saw his family again before he died.
Winter and her mother, holding the unconscious Summer, ran, but it wasn't long before one of the Defenders caught up with them. The twins' mother set down her son and looked to Winter, with pleading in her eyes. She hugged her tightly and whispered to her to keep going, that she could watch over Winter, she just needed Summer to save herself right now. With a final kiss, Winter's mother transformed into a bear and began grappling with the Defender. Winter ran, again, and hid. Her mother never came to find her, nor did her brother. She was found by an agent of the Academy, and was taken to their home for protection. After a few months of recovery, she went to the school for the first time and has been there ever since, going on three years now. Though she has a voice in the back of her head that Summer is dead, she refuses to believe it and instead thinks of him as... missing. Little does she know how right she is.
