For as long as there have been humans, there have been a special few with power, those able to sense and manipulate magical energy. At the dawn of time, in ancient civilizations, these people were seen as superhuman, some even known as gods. But as time went on, humans began to fear and persecute the magicians, burning them for being witches, torturing them, and more. Most of the former "gods" were killed.
Since this time, magicians have hid their powers. Most of the world has forgotten they exist, and they are often able to live in non-magical communities with no fear of repercussion.
But recently, a new organization known simply as The Defenders has arisen. They are the few humans who remember the power of the magicians, and they hate it. As they grow stronger, they have developed ways to pick out magicians from the normal populace. They capture the ones they find, and execute them... or worse.
The Defenders have a few magicians in their service, cowards who offer their powers to extend their lives. These magicians have powers of psychic abilities and use their magic to control other magicians brought to them, to create machines with no purpose but to rid the world of the magical.
But as this new threat becomes prominent, so does new safety. A school, The Johnson Academy of Magic, known as J.A.M. or, more commonly, just "The Academy," was formed in recent years as a haven for young magicians. It just popped out of nowhere, formed by a mysterious headmaster with many rumors surrounding him (Supposedly he is a recovered user of black magic, one who formerly may have even worked for The Defenders. He will neither confirm nor deny the value of these statements.). It is the only school of its kind, teaching students to use their magic and also to conceal it without becoming mundane. The Academy strives to help young magicians manage their power, to steer them towards white magic and help them control their thoughts to keep fear from tainting their enchantments.
It's a war for survival, The Defenders against The Academy, but who will win?
